Why is suppliers’ training so dismal?

I was recently asked by a lovely bunch of ladies to train them in the use of their laser, for hair removal. They all had the same device and were all having some difficulties in achieving good results.

They had all been trained by their supplier’s trainers, but felt that they were not getting the ‘best’ out of their equipment.

I have heard this story many times over the years. In fact, I reckon about 80% of my trainees have been previously trained by their suppliers – poorly. This is why they come to me.

I wrote a couple of posts a while ago about ‘manufacturers’ settings’ (first one, second one) and why they were usually so bad. They are designed by manufacturers to minimise any potential skin damage. While this is commendable, they also usually generate in poor to non-existent results, even after many sessions.

However, the manufacturers are keen that their customers use those settings, because it reduces the chances of those companies being sued by their poorly trained customers. Let’s face it – once they have your money, they tend to move on to the next customer. Whether you obtain good results in your salon/clinic is not really their concern!

I’m happy to say that not all suppliers fall into this category, but too many do. We all know who they are! A lot of their customers struggle constantly, or go out of business altogether because of the poor training and lack of proper customer support. When they complain to the company, they are often told that it’s their fault for not ‘doing it properly’…

I constantly hear the same drivel from these companies’ trainers – obviously this drivel is passed from one ‘trainer’ to the next over time…

After I trained those ladies (at the start of this post), one of them was contacted by her supplier. It had been noted that I had trained her. She was told “make sure you use the manufacturers’ settings”.

In other words, just ignore the training which she had just completed with me, and stick to the lousy settings which caused her to come to me in the first place.

How arrogant is that?

Rather than admit they are wrong and provide a poor service, they try to enforce their clearly useless settings. This just shows contempt for their customers.

This is a serious issue in the aesthetic laser/IPL industry – the level of training is generally dismal. I see and hear the same old nonsense time and time again. The same garbage spewed by the same companies – they just don’t want to learn and update their training!

Summary

Every one of my trainees tell me the same story – that they obtain much better results after my training. Many tell me that it has transformed their business – one even told me that I ‘saved’ her business!

Clearly, my training is very effective. It works! My techniques work. My 37 years’ experience in this industry coupled with my constant research, work!!

But if you choose to follow the advice of someone who was trained by someone who had been trained by someone who didn’t really understand what they were talking about in the first place, then that’s your choice!

Good luck with that.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences, especially with lousy training…

Hope this helps,

Mike.

  1. I’ve read all your blogs and got so much insight from them. I now do pre and post cooking. And stamp method on underarms and bikini areas. Now getting the results I wished I would have got when I purchased my machine. Thank you.
